I've been training with Icon around 3 weeks and i feel like I've found a second home (seriously.... I pretty much live there now). I was so nervous to start, especially as a woman, with no combat experience, in a male dominated environment; but the team and coaches are amazing, everyone is so encouraging, supportive and patient and it's just an awesome environment to stretch myself physically (both literally & figuratively) and mentally. Thanks Steve and all the guys and gals at Icon, you're an awesome bunch

Meditation and Martial Arts Norwich

Meditation is an integral part of many combat systems in Asia. Rooted in the very culture of Asian nations, meditation has found its way into the martial arts as well and has become an integral part of it. Meditation contributes to a sense of calm, concentration, and as such is very important in the world of martial arts. A large number of stressful and chaotic situations are an integral part of any active martial arts practitioner, and meditation is one type of medication that regulates these phenomena exceptionally well. If we talk about regular life and its unpredictability, we also come to the same conclusion that meditation is a great choice for a calm and balanced mind.

As with all martial arts, the skill of meditation comes with regular practice. All those who practice meditation for a long time testify to the true values of meditation through their calm and focused mind. They find it much easier to deal with any problems that come their way. This is simply essential when it comes to combat and a fighter who has to get his head cool and calm for the fray.

The Gracie family is famous for practicing yoga and meditation on a regular basis. Jiu jitsu and yoga are complementary, meditation is integral to both, and that is well known among those who are dedicated to practicing these skills. It is interesting to note that Royce Gracie, before his first match in the first UFC  tournament in 1993, had a heart rate that an average person only has during the bedtime.

For centuries, martial arts practitioners practiced meditation, thus empowering their minds and their martial powers. They also preached and advocated meditation as a method to improve health, manage oneself, and control stress, which ensures a longer and happier life. All these advantages that have been known by the greatest masters of martial arts, centuries ago, are confirmed by science today. A large number of scientific studies have proven that regular meditation reduces the pulse, blood pressure, affects brain activity in people suffering from chronic stress. It has also been proven that meditation, or meditation techniques, can turn on and off genes that are directly related to stress and immune function. This is direct evidence that meditation and human physiology have a very deep and reciprocal relationship.

No matter how well the body is trained for violent fights, mind must always remain calm and collected. Give meditation a chance. What may bore you slightly at first, will over time surely become a deeply fulfilling habit, and you will notice the effects of it almost right away, even though patience is the key to mastering everything.
