I've been training with Icon around 3 weeks and i feel like I've found a second home (seriously.... I pretty much live there now). I was so nervous to start, especially as a woman, with no combat experience, in a male dominated environment; but the team and coaches are amazing, everyone is so encouraging, supportive and patient and it's just an awesome environment to stretch myself physically (both literally & figuratively) and mentally. Thanks Steve and all the guys and gals at Icon, you're an awesome bunch

For BJJ Norwich Beginners

Okay, so it is your first time here? So what? Welcome.

You’re a bit nervous? Again, so what? It is as normal as it is unnecessary.

Anxious about more experienced members judging your lack of skill? Trust us, it won’t happen. We were all once in your place, and the community that showed us that there is always room for improvement, and no room for embarrassment, is here for you as well. Sooner than you think, some other newbie will be needlessly worried about what you may think of their skills. Yes, you. You won’t stay a beginner forever.

When this form of recreation becomes a routine, you will realize how similar it is to life. Occasionally, you will be brilliant and occasionally quite average. Sometimes you will fail, and then learn from those mistakes. Some techniques you’ll like and some just won’t suit you, and that’s perfectly normal. Motivation is essential, and then the role of the coach enters the scene.

The trainer should not be an encyclopedia of foreign terms, nor a big scary untouchable bloke, but should, on the contrary, interest you, help you understand the importance of  each particular exercise (which at first glance makes no sense), guide and help you build a relationship that entails mutual respect and appreciation. Many coaches are traditionalists in terms of access to training and teacher-student relationships, but times change and we have to live up to them.

Access to recreational training cannot and should not be the same for all participants. The intensity of the training must be adjusted to the age of the recreational athlete and his or her personal abilities, which an experienced coach can evaluate after only two to three training sessions. Gender is also taken into account, because the musculature of women and men reacts differently, so forcing the same exercises, after a while, can lead to counter-effects, and there is a possibility of injury. For this reason, the trainer should design a program that will suit the student. It is not that difficult when working with separate groups, but if it is a mixed group, the challenge becomes slightly greater, but don’t you worry, you will be properly guided.

Finally, it should be remembered that you, just like most recreational athletes come to training for several reasons:

-in the first place because of your overall health,

-because of good shape and good physical appearance,

-because you want to learn the fighting techniques you can use if you fin yourself in a difficult or dangerous situation,

-for fun, and trust us, you will definitely underestimate the sheer amount of fun you’ll have here,

-and most importantly – because of the complete sense of satisfaction after training that all those in the martial arts know. You will as well, even after the first training.

Icon BJJ Norwich’s unique beginner structured training programme will tick all the boxes.
